MetaMic
Digital cultural heritage: a participatory metaverse of the unbuilt architectures of Michelangelo Buonarroti
PRIN 2022-PNRR P2022KLELT
MetaMic is a transdisciplinary research project involving expertise in the fields of architectural history, architectural representation, computer design communication design and digital IT
Objectives
The main aim of MetaMic is to create a virtual environment consisting of Michelangelo Buonarroti’s unrealised architectures set in their original urban environments. Unlike other experiences of digital enhancement of cultural heritage, the contents of MetaMic never existed in reality, but only in the imagination of an artist.
Challenge
The challenge is to apply to a framework dedicated to cultural content, some of the communicative and informational characteristics of current meta-verses: immersiveness in a 3D environment, augmented reality, interactivity, participativeness, FAIR (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability and Reusability) requirements.
Metamic users will be able to interact with the recreated 3D environments, download and upload content, and exchange views with other users, making the platform a living place for cultural and personal relationships, including entertaining gaming experiences. For researchers and scholars, on the other hand, Metamic can become a place for the production and exchange of knowledge, open over time to external contributions. No similar experiences in the field of cultural heritage are currently known.
Main Activities
- Selection of some unrealised Michelangelo architectural designs
- Philological, metrical and material interpretation of graphic and textual sources
- 2D reconstructive drawings (hand-drown and vector graphics)
- Reconstruction of 3D digital models
- Models upload in CNR’s ATON framework
- Creation of human-centred designed interfaces dedicated to different levels of users
- Implementation of the concrete operability of the system
Team
In the Metamic project are involved internationally recognised Michelangelo scholars, the largest existing centre in the field of instrumental surveys of Florentine architectural complexes, qualified members in communication and accessibility design, and the largest Italian research centre in the digital enhancement of cultural heritage participate in MetaMic.
